The Red Eye Tetra, a strikingly beautiful freshwater fish, is known for its silver body and the distinctive red spot above each eye. This active schooling fish originates from the calm rivers and streams of South America, where it thrives in soft, slightly acidic waters. Its manageable size of 2-3 inches makes it a popular choice for community aquariums.

The Red Eye Tetra is instantly recognizable by its metallic silver body and the vibrant red mark near its eyes. Its fins are often edged with a faint black or white, adding to its visual appeal. These fish are peaceful and social, best kept in schools of six or more to ensure they feel secure and exhibit their natural behaviors.

A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is required for a small school of Red Eye Tetras. The tank should be decorated with plants, driftwood, and rocks to mimic their natural habitat while leaving open swimming areas. Subdued lighting is ideal, as it reduces stress and enhances their coloration. Maintain a stable pH between 6.0 and 7.5, a temperature of 72-78°F, and water hardness of 4-12 dGH for optimal health.

Red Eye Tetras are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet. Provide them with high-quality flakes or pellets as a staple, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Offering a diverse diet not only keeps them healthy but also intensifies their natural coloration.

Regular maintenance is key to keeping Red Eye Tetras healthy. Perform weekly water changes of 25-30% and ensure efficient filtration to maintain water quality. These fish are hardy but sensitive to sudden changes in their environment, so monitor water parameters closely.

Red Eye Tetras are excellent community fish and coexist peacefully with other non-aggressive species. Ideal tank mates include other tetras, Corydoras catfish, and small gouramis. Avoid housing them with fin-nipping species or larger, aggressive fish.

Breeding Red Eye Tetras is relatively straightforward with the right setup. Use a separate breeding tank with slightly acidic water (pH ~6.5) and a temperature around 78°F. Provide fine-leaved plants or spawning mops for egg deposition. After spawning, remove the adults to prevent them from consuming the eggs. The eggs typically hatch within 24-36 hours, and fry become free-swimming after a few days.
